The IWOS Is Featured in Air & Space Forces Magazine
June 29, 2023
As the authorized distributor of Intellisense Systems, we are excited to share this official feature on the groundbreaking IWOS® tactical weather station:
In a detailed report on the importance of weather observations in austere or denied terrain, the military aviation magazine shines a spotlight on the IWOS tactical weather station from Intellisense Systems.
The Integrated Weather Observation System (IWOS®) from Intellisense was recently featured in an article from Air & Space Forces magazine. The report by Senior Editor David Roza examines how critical weather observations are in United States Air Force (USAF) operations, particularly in the use of Agile Combat Employment (ACE), a concept wherein service members execute missions from small or unattended airfields. These operations are essential for combating any near-peer adversaries and maintaining the Air Force’s domain advantage in the skies. The IWOS is currently expected to become the primary tactical, man-portable weather station used by the USAF over the next few years.

The article begins by exploring the challenges of acquiring and transmitting environmental data in areas where no weather observations are currently taking place. It mentions that the previous portable solution, the Tactical Meteorological Observing System (TMOS), was very cumbersome, weighing nearly 200 lb, consisting of up to 80 separate components, and requiring at least 30 minutes and 2 to 3 service members to install.
“You hear stories all the time about dudes having to jump TOC [tactical operations center] and move like a mile and a half away,” Tech Sgt. Kyle Chambers of the 2nd Weather Squadron is quoted in the article. “So they have to pack it all up, attach cord to all these little handles, strap them to their belt and just drag this thing to the new location. They stop, set it all up, and then an hour later they have to jump TOC and do it all over again.”
Last year, the USAF announced that the IWOS will be replacing the legacy TMOS. In contrast to the legacy system, the IWOS weighs just 25 lb, fits inside a single case, and takes less than 10 minutes for one service member to install. Intellisense’s tactical weather station boasts an innovative, ruggedized, interlocking cylindrical design so that airmen, service members, and other users can get the exact weather parameters they need for their operations. It combines over a dozen key weather parameters, including temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed/direction, and cloud layer height to 25,000 ft, with data processing, data logging, a solar power system, and secure communications through an Iridium satellite connection. Cloud layer height in particular is critical for ensuring successful aircraft takeoffs/landings in locales with no permanent surface-level observations. Additionally, the system is far more discrete than its predecessor, thus lowering the risk of detection in denied terrain.
The article affirms that that IWOS delivers the data that Air Force weather specialists need in a much smaller, robust package. It also looks at the importance of communications and supporting service members who may be engaging with near-peer adversaries in austere areas. Roza quotes the Air Force’s 2021 explainer on the doctrine of ACE: “By empowering subordinates at the lowest capable level to make decisions and take decisive action at their level, mission command provides the flexibility and agility required to seize opportunities despite enemy denial or degradation of communications.”

AWAS
AWAS – Windshear Alert System
AWAS (Anemometric Windshear Alert System) is a low-level windshear detection and alert system based on a network of ground-based wind speed and direction sensors. It is primarily used for aviation weather monitoring in airport takeoff and approach areas.
The system continuously measures wind speed and direction through an array of anemometers installed around runways and along approach and departure paths. A central processing system analyzes differences in wind conditions between monitoring points to identify low-level windshear, gust fronts, microbursts, and other hazardous wind phenomena that may affect aircraft operations.

The Cleaver-Brooks ClearFire®-CE (CFC-E) is a high-efficiency condensing firetube hot water boiler featuring a large water capacity, duplex stainless steel pressure vessel, and advanced TurboFer® heat transfer technology. Its design combines high condensing performance, low waterside pressure drop, system flexibility, and a compact footprint.
The CFC-E is suitable for both new installations and retrofit projects. Its large water capacity and dual-return design support high ΔT and primary variable flow systems, helping reduce system flow rates and pumping energy while maximizing condensing performance.
Product Overview
High-Efficiency Heat Transfer
The ClearFire®-CE utilizes Cleaver-Brooks TurboFer® technology to create turbulence within the firetubes, improving heat transfer between the flue gas and heat transfer surfaces.
Combined with AluFer® tube technology, the design significantly increases the effective heat transfer surface area while providing excellent thermal conductivity. This allows the CFC-E to achieve high condensing performance and energy efficiency within a compact boiler footprint.
Flexible Hydronic System Integration
The CFC-E features a large water capacity pressure vessel designed to withstand thermal shock and accommodate high ΔT system designs. Dual returns allow different return-water temperatures to enter the boiler separately, helping maximize condensing performance and providing greater system design flexibility.
Low waterside pressure drop helps reduce pump head requirements and pumping energy, while making the boiler well suited for primary variable flow applications.
Advanced Burner and Controls
The linkage-less burner provides fully modulating operation with a standard 10:1 turndown ratio, allowing boiler output to closely match system demand without the use of complex mechanical air/fuel linkages.
The integrated control system monitors burner operation, fan speed, boiler water temperature, safety interlocks, and other critical operating conditions. Integrated O₂ trim capability can continuously optimize the air-fuel ratio based on measured flue gas oxygen levels.

Heat Transfer Technology
TurboFer® Technology
TurboFer® technology increases turbulence within the firetubes, improving contact between the hot flue gas and heat transfer surfaces. This enhances flue-side heat transfer and contributes to the boiler's compact, high-efficiency design.
AluFer® Tubes
AluFer® tube technology combines high thermal conductivity with corrosion-resistant construction. The design significantly increases the effective heat transfer surface area and helps maximize heat recovery from the flue gas.
Condensing Operation
When return-water temperatures are sufficiently low, water vapor in the flue gas condenses on the heat exchanger surfaces and releases latent heat that would otherwise be lost through the exhaust.
Low return-water temperatures, high ΔT system designs, and primary variable flow operation can increase the amount of time the boiler operates in the condensing range, improving overall system efficiency.
System Design
Dual-Return Configuration
The dual-return arrangement allows higher- and lower-temperature return water to enter the boiler separately. Directing lower-temperature return water to the appropriate section of the heat exchanger helps maximize flue gas condensation and heat recovery.
High ΔT Systems
The large water capacity and thermal-shock-resistant pressure vessel support systems with wider supply and return water temperature differences. A higher ΔT can reduce the required system flow rate for a given heating load, potentially reducing pipe sizes and pumping energy.
Primary Variable Flow
The CFC-E is designed to take advantage of primary variable flow pumping systems. System flow can vary with actual heating demand, reducing unnecessary pumping and bypass flow while improving overall plant efficiency.
Retrofit Applications
With its compact footprint and minimal side-clearance requirements, the CFC-E is well suited for existing boiler room upgrades and replacement of older non-condensing hot water boilers.
